she's the ONE:

Be still my heart.
Our little lamb, Talia, is officially a YEAR old today... where did that come from so suddenly?!

She's still the sweetest apple of her whole family's eye, I can never quite tell which one of us is most smitten with her. Our oldest, Azriel (5) still acts like every.day.is.Christmas to see her baby sister who is just "SOOOOO CUTE!!" she can't even handle it.

I still maintain that having a third child is a wonderful gift of 'perspective'.  Since the first two have grown in much the same blur of diapers and delight... I feel like this time I at least knew enough to stop and savour this child through each stage.
Despite sleepless nights and all the rest she may have syphoned from me.
I've counted (almost) all of them as extra moments to snuggle her.

This little bundle of blue eyes and two teeth loves her family.
She delights in peek-a-boo.
She squeals from tickles.
She eats ALL the food put before her!
She's a crawling machine.
She stills sits up at night and doesn't know how to lie down again...

And, she's our gift from God.

Happy Birthday little lamb.

11 things...

11 things:

1. Those bright searching blue eyes.
2. The smile as wide as a banana.
3. The way she sucks her thumb and rubs her nose with her forefinger.
4. Her crazy squeals of delight in the jumper.
5. The seizure shakes at taking a toy away.
6. The backwards crawl across the floor.
7. Her happy clappy hands.
8. The joy of sibling love.
9. The smell of her neck.
10.  The strawberry blonde shimmer of her hair.
11. Her sweetness that fills our nest.

Yes, our lil' Talia is almost 11 months now!
She's still as gentle as a lamb all day, and still as loud as a lion all night.

A.musing.mama! 4.6

So, I don't know about you, but when the baby is having a fit of 'ain't nothing going to make me happy' I start to go through the mental checklist:

hungry? angry? wet diaper? tired? sick? scared? full moon? voodoo curses? etc.

And when I come up empty.
Teething.
She is always teething if nothing else.

Because that one word still makes me feel like a have a 'clue' about this whole motherhood gig.  It's the answer to calm the fact that I don't have the answers.

Granted, she may be legitimately teething as well.
So, win win... or, something like that (where you still feel like you're losing).

A.musing.mama,
Mel :o)

A letter to my 'young mama' self:

Some of you may remember that post where I wrote a letter to my 'sixteen year old self'...yes?
Well, today I wanted to write a letter to myself as a new mom... because it's also a lot of things I want to say to all young/new mamas out there.
So here it is:

Dear mama Mel,

Congratulations on just making it through the most intense, horrific, wild and wonderful event of your life - birthing that stubborn little girl into this world!  I am so proud of you, and amazed at your strength to just do what you did!  (However, you really should have just told hubby Ben to 'stay up at your head'... sooo, give him time to come around from the post-traumatic shock).

There's just a few things I want to tell you, but I know you won't hear me.
Yeah, that's your first issue - listen to those who love you.
I know you feel like you've read all the books, and know all the strategies to enact on this new child.  I know you feel super sensitive to anyone telling you how to 'do your new job'.  But, remember that those who love you, and are offering advice, are doing so because they... wait for it... LOVE you.  They aren't being super-judgey-pants and trying to point the finger.  Their suggestions aren't saying 'hey, you clearly suck at this gig'.. they're saying 'hey, I've walked this wild road.. can I help you watch for the potholes?'.  So yeah, turn down the defensive, and tune in to all the sage help from mamas who have gone before you.

Next, savour these moments.
I know.. you want to slap me for saying that.  When the baby just won't settle... the screaming through the nights seem endless... and the window seems like the appropriate place to throw your darling child through... you just want to be DONE.  Savour this?
Just know it's a moment.  It feels like eternity... but you'll turn around and the child will be rushing out the door to school.  The nights will be quiet... you'll stare at the ceiling and long for just one more night of that rhythmic two-step with the warmth of their weight against your chest.

Lastly, this new chapter of your life is ushering you into a massive identity overhaul.
It seems as though the labels are all laying on the table before you, waiting to see which one will stick.  Will you define yourself as the 'hippy-all-natural-crunchy' mama?  Will you be the productive, nothing stops me from keeping the house clean, mama?  Do you co-sleep? Do you breastfeed or do formula?  Check, check, check.  These boxes start to feel stifling.
It seems like your previous identity is being burned up on this altar.
Because, yes, this is sacrificial living at it's truest form.
Giving all you having to this tiny being who can give nothing back.
Your wardrobe, your schedule, your free time, your social calendar, your diet... everything becomes focused on nurturing this child.
There will be moments you resent them for this reality.
You'll grow weary of constantly having to think about someone else before yourself.
The craving for 'me-time' will feel like that dangling carrot... that insatiable longing to just dive headlong back in on yourself will taunt you.

Trust me when I say this:
Do not resent the gift of selflessness this child forces upon you.
Keep yourself on this altar.
They are God's fingers at work in you.
They are burning away your pride, your self-righteous reliance, your petty pursuits.
Hide your identity in Christ alone.
Your life will become sweet incense.

Oh, one more last thing... I'm not going to tell you how many kids you end up having, but they are a treasure.  Just know, the best present you can give them is your presence.  You can't afford all the latest child gadgets, newest outfits, and wild vacations...  they don't care.
Because, you know what?  Our soon-to-come son just woke up from his nap crying.
You know what I did?
I held him.
Rocked him back and forth.
Whispered: "It's ok, mama's here".
He snuggled in and stopped crying.
Magic.

Mama's here.
The two most powerful words you have to give.

Love,
Mel ;o)

the big 5:

She's five for five today, friends!

5 months old, on the 5th.

She's still the sweetest addition to our nest.  Currently our older daughter is playing peek-a-boo with her as she squeals delight.  Azriel says: "I'm still so glad you had this baby, mama... I thought you were going to have a boy, she surprised me!!"

Talia, our little lamb, we delight in you.
Sure, you know how to throw down a fussy fit most evenings... but I know these moments will be a blur soon.  You keep growing too fast on us.

Love you,
mama

three? Oh, me.

This is that monthly post where I start hyperventilating...
...where's my paper bag?

Because, she - our wee number three - is that many months now.
Three.
A quarter of a year.

We still can't hardly handle how cute she is being to us all here.
Sweetly cooing and grinning and gurgling while the kids squeal all around her.

She's a keeper.

Happy 3 months sweet lil' lamb.

The beauty and the blow-outs of babies.
---
And, on a real lucky day... she can do a three part chorus of: sneeze-burp-poop action.

Yes, parenthood is messy business.
It's a good thing they're so darn cute.

Happy weekend'ing friends!

same hat, different day:

 2 months old now.
2 weeks old then.
------------

Because that much cuteness is cruel to keep all to ourselves.
Our sweet cheeks is growing out of her newborn bonnet... the very same one that donned my head as a baby.
All together now: awwwwwwww.

Your daily dose of baby'ness goodness.
You're welcome.

Mel ;o)

two sweet...

She's celebrating her 'two month birthday' by conducting symphonies in her sleep.
Those delicate fingers dance through the air while her eyelids flutter to rest.
Then all is still.
All is quiet, but for the soft rapid snoring of her tiny frame.
And yes, I'm still absolutely ridiculously smitten with this newest addition to our nest.
In fact, all of us here are.
Big sister Azriel still acts like it's Christmas every morning - rushing up to her baby sister like she's the biggest present with a bow on top.  During the day she always wants to help me put Talia down for a nap saying "I'll pray and sing for her, Mama" and then she spontaneously blurts out the sweetest prayer thanking God for such a 'sweet baby sister...' and hums her rock-a-bye-baby.
Big brother Hudson is pretty fond of her now too, occasionally bringing over a soother to shove in her face or offering to "hold 'er?" any time I'm carrying her around.
And Ben - sweet Dad - has the brightest smile for his little girl.

Happy two months little lamb.

Mel ;o)

4.24.2014

...somebunny that I used to know.

She's growing right in front of our eyes.
Our little lamb, Talia.
(Or.. in this case, bunny).

As I hold her in my arms I can almost hear those little limbs extending.
Those tiny fingers and toes stretching.
Slow down baby girl... mama wants to savour these 'little' moments longer.
---------

And now a beautiful quote from this book I'm devouring currently:
"Sweet, exhausted, amazing, resilient, fearless, remarkable, run-down mom - this book is for you...
...I'm thinking about all of us who are dancing our babies back to sleep or waiting up for them, like every generation of mothers before us - the ancient two-step that tattoos our love into the carpet, the hardwood, and the bosoms of our children".

(Lisa-Jo Baker: Surprised by Motherhood)
------------
The ancient two-step... how well I know this dance.
This rhythm that pulls us into its gravity.
No longer in the womb, but still pressed up to my chest.
Every day she grows, and my heart follows.

Mel.

6 weeks!

Well friends, it's now been 6 weeks.
6 weeks since we brought home this bundle of squeaking, squawking sweetness.

6 weeks since our family became a set of five.
Our 4.5yr old suddenly looked like a teenager (and suddenly turned into a 'mom' for her sister).
6 weeks since our son became a 'big brother'.
Now he has the cutest smile for her and say "hold 'er?"
 ------------------
Yes, our Talia is fitting in just fine here.
It seems like she's growing right before our eyes.
In fact, her last midwife appointment today confirmed that she's packed on 11lbs now.
-----------------
We're now entering that delightful stage of 'make the baby laugh'.
My face is getting sore from making such huge smiley faces as I try to win her adorable gummy grin.  Oh, and the coos and garble giggles are starting too... which is enough to make you melt.

Seriously, every person would quit their day job to do this.
I may just put it on my future resumes: "I made babies smile".
It's the job and the payroll all in one!

Back to work I go,

mama Mel ;o)

A.musing.mama! 3.0

I keep waiting for this baby to 'suck back my calories' with nursing - and reward me with my previous belly size.  (Much like her siblings kindly did before her).
No dice.
The easter chocolate isn't helping either.

So 'jelly belly' mama it is.
Time to take up belly dancing and embrace the jiggles I guess.

The husband gently reminds me that I *could* attempt exercising.. or restrain from the fistfuls of chocolate.. but I figure I'm just giving him more to love in this state, right.. right?

Ok, off I wiggle, jiggle.. go.

the long and short of it:

Well friends, it's been one month.
A mere moment.
A lifetime.
All rolled in to one little bundle of baby here.

Yes, our Talia is celebrating her first month with us today (while her Daddy's birthday was just yesterday.. so we'll just eat extra cake for her!).

It feels like she's been a part of our family all along.
Yes, it's been a lot of bliss having her around.. but there's the reality of the not-so-fun bits too.
------------------------------------
I tend to just scrounge a few hours of sleep here and there.
She's had congestion/cold for the past two weeks (half her life!)... which is unnerving to sleep near.  She hacks and snorts like someone trying to drown a warthog.
The 'baby acne' stage has also hit with full force... so her cherub cheeks are a frightful mess of extra pepperoni.
Her cute brown locks have fallen from her crown... so now she's sporting a 'skullet' with only hair at the back.

But's she's our pimply, snuffly, balding beauty!
------------------------------
I'm still desperately seeking to savour all the sweet little moments though.
Like clutching the grains of hour glass sand - they are so tiny, so frail, but so full of life and beauty all packed in there.

She already seems to stretch out across my lap, when before she could fit snug into the crook of my arm.  And while there's those moments of wishing she would just 'grow past' these early stages of night feedings and bowel screamings... I don't want to lose this teeny baby stage either.  I guess all of motherhood is a combination of extremes and opposites.
My heart feels a muddled jumble of exhaustion and elation, anger and adoration, despair and delights.  One moment I'm complaining 'at' her for keeping us up the whole night.... and then she flashes me a gummy smile in the dim light of the room, and I melt.
"Lets stay up all night so I can gaze at you" I coo.

Happy one month little lamb.
We love ewe.

My biggest regret:

I know, I know... this is no longer a 'crafty/creative/d.i.y' themed blog anymore...
this is all mama - all the time - isn't it?

I'm ok with that.
It's the season of life I'm in, and I'm lovin' it.

Because the crazy thing is... that creative side of me would never have guessed that this 'mama' side of me existed a few years ago.
As an artist - my passion was all consuming, and I couldn't imagine how I would ever have such a thrill from little messy munchkins running around my home.

You may recall that post a long time ago about how my guy and I never ever planned to pursue having kids (though I had visions of a home filled with teenage foster kids).

You may also remember the more recent post about discovering that this latest 'surprise baby' was going to be added to our nest.
 ------------------------------

And you know what I regret most?
I regret that I thought we would regret having this new baby.
I regret that I ever thought having any kids would be a hassle.

I regret that I was so cynical about the precious value of a soul.

-----------------------------

Now I couldn't imagine our family without this sweet new daughter in it.
Now, I don't live with regret... but I rejoice.
I hold these souls with gratitude.
Thankful that God would bless us with them.
Grateful that they fill our home and hearts.

mama Mel ;o)

A.musing.mama! 2.9

Yup, my heart just 'esploded'.
Nothing is more blissful and beautiful as watching a newborn slumber.

Isn't it funny how we can just stare endlessly at a baby sleeping.. it's as entrancing as watching a campfire.  In fact, there's a running joke with our relatives about that.. we all sit in the living room and stare at the baby like it's the fireplace.

Since I've been doing a lot of this lately, I thought I'd whip up this quick sketch.

You can find the previous comics from our 'real life' family HERE.

Happy weekend'ing friends!

monster-sized love:

I've been dusting off the sewing machine lately... (feeling back to my ol' creative self again after 10 months of baby-brewing).  During this 'babymoon' I still wanted the other kids to have some special quality time with mama... so, daughter Azriel and I attempted her first real sewing project:

A monster doll!

She chose the project (because we don't do patterns here), the fabrics, the buttons, the shapes/sizes of each part.
She helped me guide the fabric through the machine, stuffed the parts with fluff, and even did all the hand stitching.

It was pretty special sewing together, seeing her patience and eagerness to stick with this project over a few days.

Then watching with delight as she sweetly declared that she had made it for her new sister, because she 'loves her!'.
The same reason I've created so many things for our kids over the years...
...a monster sized love.

Talia is a mix of shock and awe...

crafting with joy,
Mel ;o)
