when the Pooh hits the fan...

I don't know about you, but some days I need a reality check to slap me awake.
Morally, that is.
They say that 'character is what you are in the dark (when no ones looking)'...and that was my test today.

Here's the scenario:
We had rented a Winnie the Pooh DVD from our local library.
Our two-ddler daughter got a hold of it.
I soon discovered two small cracks in the disc - tried it in the machine - and the movie seizures without any sound playing.

{insert exasperated groan}

In that first split second my thoughts were helter-skelter like kids caught breaking rules:

"quick! Return it, and pretend it's not broken!"
....
"buy a replacement disc for cheap...!"
....
"Mum's the word, get Ben to return it!"

(None of these options were admirable I admit, but it was the first response in light of the real issue: fear.)   I feared the cost of getting fined.  The cost of replacing a disc we couldn't justify the expense of with our current budget.  The fear of telling Ben "here's one more stupid thing that's wasting your hard earned salary".

Integrity.
Mine was faltering over such a silly predicament as this piece of Pooh.
I sought an 'objective perspective' by picturing someone else in my place.
That person who returned a broken disc and cowardly slid away... was a jerk.
That jerk would be me if I made such a decision.
Also, the thought of hiding even this 'small' compromise from Ben made me want to puke or punch myself in the face.  Of course, once I did tell him, he instantly said we needed to return it and pay the fee levied (he makes integrity seem so easy).

By now you may be thinking that's a silly scenario, or that I need to 'lighten up', or it's not a big deal to tell a few wee lies here and there.

But I think the small - albeit trite - scenarios have a way of revealing our character even before the big ones hit us.  To be faithful in little, is to be faithful in much.
It reminds me of Robert Duval's character from the western movie Open Range telling the young cattle hand to not cheat at playing cards saying:
“A man's trust is a valuable thing, Button. You don't want to lose it over a handful of cards.”

Amen.
In a world of politics, marketing, falseness and fears... we need to stand up and show what integrity looks like.
If character is what we are in the dark, I want to shine as light.
My yes, to be yes.
My no, to be no.

I want my actions and thoughts and motives to be as transparent as God sees them.
To walk in the Light as He is in the Light. (1 John 1:7).

So yes, when the push comes to shove,
or the pooh hits the fan,
I need to act with integrity.

And we will pay that damage fee... because it's cheaper than the cost of our character.

Life has a funny way of using the little moments to teach us big truths, doesn't it?

He's still working on me,
Mel ;o)

[four] he's a jolly good fellow...

Four years ago today, my ben and I were there:
Under a tumultuous sky (thanks to hurricane Gustav)... with three tents perched in rolling hills.
My favourite day. ever. happened.

Surrounded by friends and family (above: our whole crew of in-laws & out-laws).
Despite having over 200 guests, it was still hard to not invite more that I wished we had room for!  Though, the nervous minutes before the ceremony had me wishing it was just a handful of people.  But in the end it was such an incredible experience to be in a mob-scene of love and laughter all united in joy for our marriage.

Our friend's were such an incredible part of our wedding... we could not have had our dream day (on a shoestring budget) without their amazing input.
They prepped.sewed.baked.cooked.decorated.photographed.cleaned.entertained.
That's one of the things I still love most about our day... how every detail was handmade with care by friends (even my wedding dress).

Another special detail was our 'woodland theme'... right down to the two bunnies on our wedding cake.  (Back-story: Ben wrote a wonderful proposal story to me about a guy bunny that fell for a girl bunny... yes, that guy can write!).

So of course, we also planted a tree.
Meanwhile, Ben looks about twelve here... but I promise we were legal marrying age!

That's the main thing I loved about our day: that guy.
My guy.
I would marry him all over again.
In a field.. or cardboard box.
In wonderful clothes... or rags.
Surrounded by friends... or alone.
As long as I get him, it's the best.day.ever.
---------
How can four years feel like a moment, and a lifetime all rolled in to one?
How can love strengthen and weaken you in equal intensity?

I'm still learning and loving more about him each day.
And by God's grace I hope we have many more days ahead.

Happy Anniversary Ben,
you're the best thing since sliced bread.

D.I.Y: bohemian beaded necklace.

Time to get groovy, splash on the patchouli, and add some hippy.bohemian vibe to your wardrobe.
This is such a fun and simple project to release your inner artsy side (even for those who don't think they have one):

 Supplies Needed:
*embroidery floss / twine / or necklace wire
*various beads: wooden / glass / stones / shells / mini doilies / etc.
(*hint: I'll often thrift necklaces just to bust them apart for their beads!)
*a few larger 'feature' pieces: pottered tags I made seen here
*attachment clasp

 1. Stretch out your thread nice and long (4'-5' roughly).
2. I threaded a needle to push it through the beads easily... now start stacking those beads.
----------------------------------------------------------
NOTE:  the key to capturing the 'relaxed.eclectic.non-conforming' nature of the bohemian style is to not stress the pattern.  The more random the clusters of bead types, the better.
(For some of us OCD brains... you may want to grab beads blindly and string them on!).

To create gaps along the strands, just thread through a bead and loop back around and through again (seen in orange above).. this will anchor a bead in place.

I used some pottered pendants that I had made as feature pieces along the necklace.
You can find a larger focal point for your necklace in any jewellery/bead store.
Enjoy!

Have a funky day you free-spirited friends,
Mel ;o)

helter-skelter...

:: Am I the only person who hears someone talking in an accent and unintentionally starts to mimic it?
Even when reading books... like the one I'm loving right now, I start using words like "tarnation/ gracious me/ whereupon/ forsooth".
(Maybe I share a mockingbird's instinct?)

:: The house is warm with fresh bread (that my Ben made) and chocolate chip banana muffins that I baked right afterwards... (I was seeking a 'vehicle' for the chocolate chips other than my hand-to-mouth standby).

:: The kids have been sickly this weekend... (right on the heels of me remarking how they've been healthy for so long!... I'll keep my big mouth shut next time).

:: Oh, and guess what?!  Our 6.5 month Hudson finally slept through the night last night!!!
(Can you tell I'm happy?)  Seriously... it was getting stupid.crazy around here.  I kept trying to get him to 'graduate' to sharing a room with Azriel, since keeping him with us meant waking up every few hours to 'nurse-him-back-to-silence'.
The brainwave this past weekend was to put him in the other room and bring the good sleeper Azriel into ours.
Genius.
We just may know what sleep/sanity looks like again around here.

:: Tomorrow is the big back-to-school hype... which has me thinking about what on earth we plan to do with our kids in the future (still on the fence about variations of home-schooling vs. school systems).

::  Sometimes I wish I was more high-tech... or could at least read computer code, so that I could make desired changes with this blog.  Arghh.

::  The house is quiet again, the crickets are chirping, time to enjoy a warm muffin with a tall glass of vanilla almond milk... and get back to the swamp!

helter-skelter
this post
my brain,
thanks for being here.
